Vitamin D is commonly known as the sunshine vitamin because it is synthesised in the skin following exposure to sunlight. Most healthy adults should be able to get enough Vitamin D from being outside in the sun, unfortunately in the UK in the winter time there isn’t much opportunity to get a daily dose of sunshine, and this combined with the fact that dietary sources are limited leaves us at high risk of not getting enough vitamin D.
Science is making it increasingly apparent that Vitamin D is crucial to our health, it plays a role in the absorption of calcium and is therefore important to the health of our bones and teeth. It also supports muscle function and the maintenance of a healthy immune system.
The latest statistics show that one in five Brits have low vitamin D levels, this makes us susceptible to certain health issues. For example Vitamin D helps to reduce the risk of falling associated with postural instability and muscle weakness. Falling is a risk factor for bone fractures among men and women 60 years of age and older.*
The NHS recommends that you should take a 400iu/ 10µg supplement of Vitamin D each day during the autumn and winter months. From about late March/early April to the end of September, the majority of people should be able to make all the vitamin D they need from sunlight on their skin but during the short winter days when we're covered up with coats, hats and scarves this is not possible.
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding then a daily 400iu supplement is recommended regardless, along with those categorised as experiencing very little or no sunshine exposure.
Those that are particularly in need of Vitamin D supplementation include people who:
• have dark skin
• rarely get outdoors or cover their skin when outside
• eat no meat or oily fish
